I’ve tried both a Website and a Blog. I recommend a
Blog for anyone just starting out. They each have
their advantages and disadvantages. In my
opinion, a blog is much simpler and easier to
develop. Mine, http://askralphlyon.com/home  is a
hosted (not free) WordPress blog.

Yes, blogs can be just as effective as a website.
My AskRalphLyon blog is sort of a mixture, it has
both blog entries and static web page style pages.

To best help you, I need to know a bit more
about what you are trying to do. Do you have
a plan for how you intend to make money online?

Do you have a niche, a set of expertise that
you can use to provide value to others?
To have a successful blog, you need to have
engaging content on some topic.

Do you have a plan for how you will get people
to come read your blog?

Do you have a plan for what people will purchase
from/through your blog?

How much money can you put into your business
on a monthly basis for tools and advertising. Do
you need to start on a shoestring? or can you afford
to get the best tools?

I highly recommend using GVO, if you can afford it.
